English Learner Advisory Committee
Whenever 21 or more English learners are enrolled at a school site, the site has a functioning EL Advisory Committee (ELAC) on programs and services for English learners.
Lincoln’s ELAC committee meets on a monthly basis and is made up of administration, parents, and teachers. If you are interested in becoming part of the committee, please contact the office for details or come to one of the monthly ELAC meetings.
Goals for Newark Unified School District’s Program for English Learners
* English learners will acquire full proficiency in English as rapidly and effectively as possible.
* English learners will meet state and district content standards for academic achievement.
The intent of the Newark Unified School District’s English Language Development Program is to facilitate the acquisition and mastery of the English language by English learners, provide access to the core curriculum for all students, and provide a student support system that takes into consideration the student’s self-esteem, cultural and family customs, academic and English language needs. Addressing these areas assists in providing all students with opportunities to develop their full academic and personal potential.
The district provides programs to support English language learning. The district program provides English learners with English Language Development daily from 30 minutes to 3 hours and core curricular subjects taught with primary language support serve as a means to English language mastery. English Language Development supports reading, writing, listening and oral language development both socially and academically. Specifically Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) strategies are methodologies used for direct academic support in core subject area classes.
